What barcode reader are you using?

Try to get the programmers manual. I played with linear and 2D
scanners.  On my model, you show it a sequence of barcodes to enable
"programming mode."

Then you can reconfigure the reader to behave differently by scanning
special codes. I suspect different manufacturers have different codes.

Some 2D readers can actually capture a picture of the barcode and send
it to the host.
